The M-T CPW02 is a compact automotive smoke machine that helps you locate leaks in EVAP systems, vacuum lines, and intake plumbing — before they turn into a check engine light, a failed emissions test, or an unnecessary parts swap. It runs directly from the vehicle’s 12V battery and uses disposable smoke pods, so there is no oil to fill and no mess to clean up.
What It Can Test
- EVAP systems (fuel tank, purge valve, vapor lines, fuel filler neck)
- Intake and vacuum lines
Key Features
- 12V DC battery clamps — power directly from the car battery, no wall outlet needed
- Disposable smoke pods — insert a pod, connect, and generate smoke in seconds; no refill fluid, no residue
- Air-flow adjustable nozzle — control smoke output for different line sizes
- Built-in hanging hook — secure the unit under the hood while testing
- Status indicator light — green light confirms normal smoke output
The air pump is intentionally loud — this is completely normal. Always hang the unit with the included chain hook for stability during operation.

How to Use — 4 Steps
Step 1 — Load the smoke pod
Insert the disposable pod into the machine. It powers on as its conductive contacts touch the main unit’s spring pins. The pod pierces the cartridge’s internal seal and is now ready to introduce smoke to automotive lines for leak detection.
Step 2 — Installation preparation
- Install the air-flow adjustable nozzle onto the main unit.
- Install the smoke tube onto the main unit.
- Install the lifting chain onto the main unit.
Step 3 — Hang the unit for stability
Always hang the unit with the included hook under the open hood. A swinging or tipping unit can kink the smoke tube or disconnect the 12V clamps.
Step 4 — Connect 12V DC battery and turn on
Connect the red and black clamps to the vehicle battery. Long-press the power button for 2 seconds. The air pump will start — it is loud, and that is normal.
EVAP Leak Testing Guide
Block the vent valve first. To pressurize the EVAP system, smoke must not escape from the vent side. Common methods: unplugging the vent valve and plugging its line, pinching the vent valve line, or using a bi-directional scan tool to close the EVAP vent solenoid.
Common entry points to introduce smoke into the EVAP system:
| Method | How | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Gas cap adapter (optional accessory) | Attach adapter to the fuel filler neck | Fastest and easiest method. Ensure the fuel filler neck is clean so the cap seals tight — this also prolongs adapter life |
| Intake system lines | Locate an accessible line in the EVAP system; disconnect it and plug up the other side with a cone plug | Most universal method; test the gas cap using this method too |
| EVAP service port | Use an EVAP service port adapter (optional accessory) | Not all vehicles have this port |
Where the smoke escapes is where the leak is. Watch for smoke rising from fittings, seams, or components — that is the leak point.
Before You Return It — Check These Three First
Nine times out of ten, one of these three things is the reason a CPW02 “doesn’t work.” Each one is fixable in a few minutes — and if it is a manufacturing issue on our side, we will make it right.
1. The 12V plug does not fit your vehicle’s power socket
Some earlier units shipped with a DC connector that does not seat properly in every vehicle’s 12V outlet. A free adapter is available — you should not have to return the machine for this.
How to get the free adapter:
- Open the CPW02 product page on Amazon and add the unit and the free adapter to your cart together (both items must be in the same cart for the adapter to come at no charge)
- Check out normally — the adapter ships free
- If the adapter is out of stock or you cannot find it, email support@mtmaker.com with your Amazon order number and we will send one directly
2. Weak smoke output — the smoke outlet is fully or partially clogged
If smoke comes out weak, thin, or uneven, the outlet or nozzle is usually blocked.
What to do:
- Let the unit cool, then remove the nozzle and smoke tube
- Inspect the outlet — you are looking for residue or debris blocking the opening
- Clear the blockage and reattach the nozzle; open the air-flow adjustment on the nozzle to its middle setting
- Load a fresh, fully seated pod and test again
Some earlier units left the factory with a partially clogged outlet. If cleaning does not restore full smoke output, that is on us — email support@mtmaker.com with your order number and we will send a replacement.
3. No smoke at all — the unit powers on but never produces vapor
On a limited batch, flux residue left on the heating core during assembly can prevent the core from making electrical contact, so the unit powers up but never heats a pod.
How to tell this apart from a normal pod issue:
- Try a brand-new pod, fully inserted until it seats
- Wait 30–60 seconds after the pump starts
- If the pump runs but there is no heat and no vapor at all, with a fresh pod, this is the batch defect — not something you can fix in the field
What to do: email support@mtmaker.com with your Amazon order number. We replace affected units free of charge.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No smoke at all, pump runs, fresh pod installed | Heating core not making contact (limited batch, flux residue) | Not field-fixable — email support@mtmaker.com with your order number for a free replacement |
| No smoke, unit will not heat | Pod not seated, or spring pins dirty | Re-insert the pod until it seats; wipe the spring pins clean; confirm the pod is a genuine M-T pod |
| Weak or thin smoke output | Smoke outlet or nozzle partially clogged | Remove the nozzle and smoke tube, clear the outlet, reattach, open the air-flow adjustment, retest with a fresh pod |
| Weak output with a clean outlet | Pod nearly spent | Replace with a fresh pod |
| 12V plug does not fit the socket | DC connector mismatch on earlier units | Use the free adapter (add it to your Amazon cart with the unit) or email support for one |
| Red indicator light | Pod not detected | Confirm the pod is fully inserted and is a genuine M-T pod |
| Smoke escapes at the hose or cone instead of the test point | Loose hose or cone connection | Re-seat the smoke tube; press the cone on firmly for a tighter seal |
| Pump is extremely loud | Normal by design (high-output diaphragm pump) | No action needed — hang the unit with the hook for stability |
| No leak found but the check engine light is on | EVAP leak elsewhere, or a non-smoke fault | Test the gas cap and purge valve; re-run with all entry points sealed |
Safety Precautions
- Always keep the engine off when using the machine.
- The machine gets very hot; do not touch it during or right after use.
- Operate in well-ventilated environments.
- Wear protective equipment such as heat-resistant gloves, respirator, and goggles when necessary.
- Do not leave the machine unattended while equipment is active.
- The machine uses 12V DC electricity. Do not use anything else.
- Replace the pod when vapor production decreases.
- Do not use the pod after it has been punctured; a punctured pod during operation may cause a rapid pressure release.
FAQ
Q: Why is the pump so loud?
A: The CPW02 uses a high-output diaphragm pump. Loud operation is completely normal and not a defect. Always hang the unit with the chain hook to keep it stable.
Q: Do I need to add smoke fluid or oil?
A: No. The CPW02 uses sealed disposable pods — insert one and start testing. No measuring, no spills.
Q: Will this work on all vehicles?
A: It works on any 12V vehicle for EVAP, vacuum, and intake testing. EVAP service port access varies by make and model; the gas cap adapter and cone methods cover the rest.
Q: The check engine light is on but no smoke leak was found — what now?
A: EVAP codes can also be triggered by a loose gas cap, a faulty purge valve, or a worn seal. Test the gas cap first, then re-run the smoke test with all entry points sealed.
Q: The 12V plug will not fit my vehicle’s power socket. Do I have to return it?
A: No. A free adapter is available — add the CPW02 and the free adapter to your Amazon cart together and check out normally. If you cannot find the adapter, email support@mtmaker.com with your order number and we will send one.
Q: My machine powers on but produces no smoke at all. Can I fix it?
A: Try a brand-new pod first, seated fully, and give it 30–60 seconds. If the pump runs but there is no heat and no vapor with a fresh pod, it is a manufacturing issue on a limited batch — email support@mtmaker.com with your order number and we will replace the unit free of charge.
Q: The smoke output looks weak and thin. What should I check?
A: A partially clogged smoke outlet is the usual cause. Let it cool, remove the nozzle and smoke tube, clear the outlet, reattach, open the air-flow adjustment to its middle setting, and retest with a fresh pod. If output is still weak after cleaning, contact us — we will make it right.
Q: Do I need to return the whole kit to get a replacement part?
A: No. For adapter and manufacturing issues we handle it without you shipping the kit back — that is exactly why this page exists.
